Participating with the inaugural Riverdale Youth City Council was a key factor in, and kindled my interest in our community, civic responsibility and municipal government. I would encourage the city’s teenagers to find a way to participate in any capacity with the program if they can.
Electing a former participant would be a great encouragement and motivation for our youth to get involved, learn and contribute to our community.

The Riverdale Youth City Council worked to get a sign at the Weber County Fairgrounds recognizing the City’s donation of a pavilion.

The Youth City Council decorated the City’s float for the 1995 Old Glory Days parade. I’m in the red hat in the center of the picture.

In addition to learning about the City’s different departments and government functions, we did service projects like paint the Welcome to Riverdale signs, graffiti cleanup and work along the River Trail.

We planned and hosted a one-day regional youth council leadership training and invited other youth city councils from Weber and Davis County to participate.
The youth council desperately needs an advisor who can teach them about government and not just service projects. I remember Mayor Ben always telling us service was secondary and we were there to learn about government. I don’t think these youth are getting that kind of education. If you take the next 5 years, I’ll take a turn after that.
I spoke to J. Hall about the YCC briefly at meet the candidates night. I was encouraged that she felt very optimistic about the program going forward this fall, and she was excited to have an outgoing new youth chairperson. I guess we could follow up with her sometime soon to see how it’s going.
She’s had the program 10 plus years. I don’t think it’s ever been close to what it was during that time.
Needs a new advisor–would you consider it?
I am interested to see where things go from here, and will follow up on my questions from meet the candidates night. I would never volunteer for a position that isn’t vacant. I do feel, however, like it would be a good thing if participation from elected officials increased some to supplement the efforts of staff.
